1970's House Renovation in Mairangi Bay, Auckland
This house renovation project was for a home that occupied a piece of prime real estate in a desirable North Shore suburb near the sea. The owner wanted to get more of a “wow factor” but didn’t want to go over the top with a complete rebuild.
It was a beautiful home in the 1970’s but was now in need of a major renovation both inside and especially outside. An architect was engaged to come up with the design and we were able to work together to create a beautifully renovated new home suitable for another forty years. We were very proud of the completed home as were the clients.
Renovating a period home of any age can be challenging, so it is essential to have a talented designer with vision and a free hand to create something that fits with the client’s vision. This requires some faith and courage on the part of the client. Turning a dated property into a renovation they can be proud of is relatively simple from a building perspective if the owner, the builder and the designer are all on the same page.
A 1970’s home renovation does have some challenges. While the perception is that houses were more solidly build back in the 70’s, this was not necessarily the case. Houses were more simply constructed back then and the quality of the build can vary a lot. At that time there were not the same level of rules and regulations that we have to comply with now but the quality of the timber was generally good. This assists in a renovation due to houses of that period having “good bones”, which provide a sound structure for the rebuild.
In the photos above, you can see how we changed a very dated, flimsy-looking house into a beach property the owners could be proud of!
